Being Lucky

Kim said to me this morning, "we are lucky". I nodded, we most certainly are. Last night dipped into the bitter cold as the homeless and those without means has skyrocketed. I, and many of us really, sometimes forget how luck and fortune truly befall us. I am reminded this too when I find the abadoned homes and for a moment I am able to step inside the decaying walls of what once used to be "home" to someone. The items left behind are sometimes curious if not downright befuddingly. In this particuliar house that kim and I explored, the mystery remains why all the walls were covered in old newspapers. Perhaps a poor man's way to insulate his home or an avid reader who loved the look of words plastered floor to ceiling. Newspapers dating back to September 11, 1969 - a time when that date meant nothing more than just a date. Back then you could buy a kitchen table with 4 chairs for $59.99 - a bargain that would last only until that following Saturday according to the coupons tacked to the wall.

I believe I have managed to infect Kim with the same curiosity and inquisitiveness about abadoned houses. We have found a handful around our Moncks Corner home to explore and randomely we will set out for a few hours just driving, looking, hoping. Each time we pass a grown over driveway we both cock our heads to peer down the winding line hoping to see a house in shambles. Walking through with light steps, holding a camera in one hand and steadying ourselves against floorboards that often are too soft to put your full weight onto, we press on looking for the little nuggets that make us go "hmm". And there are plenty... stay tuned for some of those highlights as well as some of our "life in the country" gleaming moments!
When art finds you

It's been over a year since I last visited the abadoned houses near Walterboro and still this bus lingers in my mind as a piece of life begging to be put into creation.
When Kim returns from her trip I think we will have to make a trip to find the bus.
